This morning I received an e-mail from the girls' high school principal, Colleen Doyle. It was the written transcript of what she read over the intercom during morning announcements. I thought I would share it with you.

Good morning Neenah High School
May I please have your attention for a brief message….
On December 14, 2012, at approximately 9:30 a.m. the lives of many changed forever. It was at this time that 20 Sandy Hook elementary students and 6 adults died at the hands of a lone gunman. Many people are left with the questions of why, how, and what now. It is important to remember that everyone processes tragedy differently; please be respectful and understanding of these differences. Neenah High School grieves along with the families, friends, and all those affected by Friday morning’s unimaginable tragedy. Out of respect, please pause for a moment of silence………
Thank you, Neenah High School, and know that we take your safety very seriously. It is at times like these that we most appreciate your support and participation of our emergency lockdown drills and other crisis preparation measures. These allow us to do all we can to assure the safety of our students and staff at Neenah High School. Today your Mod 2 teacher will review the Emergency Procedures with you. Neenah High School will participate in drills to familiarize ourselves with these procedures as soon as this week. In addition, here are a few reminders for everyone.
- All students must have an ID with them at all times. A student ID must be presented and scanned at Door 3 per your return to NHS throughout the day. Should you need to replace your ID, please see Mrs. Nass in Student Services where you can purchase one for $5.
- An ID must be presented to leave the cafeteria during lunch.
- All student office runners must have a visible ID on them when they are in the hallways.
- All students must have a pass to be in the hallways during class time.
- Students may only enter Door 3 during the school day. Entering any other door or letting someone in another door may result in disciplinary action.
- Release students are not to be in the hallways during class. Students must report to either a Core Tutorial or the NHS Library.
- All visitors to NHS must be registered in the visitation log.
Our hearts go out to our friends in Connecticut who are dealing with an unimaginable tragedy.
As we move through this week, the holiday season, and the remainder of the school year, remember one thing to keep you centered and grounded…NHS-----Be Good to Each Other.

It was the last line that got to me; it literally made me weep. Be Good to Each Other. I don't know anything about the shooter, and frankly, I don't want to. But I do know that there are a whole lot of people out there who are hurting and need help; people who need someone to be good to them. And I also know there are countless people who had their whole world shattered on Friday, people who are going to need love and support as they try to navigate their way through their sorrow. I can't even pretend to comprehend what those families are going through. But I can try and live my life in such a way that I reach out to those who might need help. I can try and live by the motto, Be Good to Each Other. I stumbled upon this song as I was getting ready to write this post. You can listen to it here.
Be Good to Each Other
Phil Stacey
May the road rise to meet us
The wind always be at our back
As we follow our dreams
May our hearts ever lead and not lose track
May we smile at the end of the day
May we always find a way
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
Well, there's already plenty of pain
In this world to last for years
Yeah, just look out any window
There's heartache and sorrow and tears
It's easy to see what we need
Now really, how hard could it be
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
We could try a little tenderness
Yeah, and see how we like it
It just might bring out our very best
If we keep love in sight
And be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
I'm sorry for times
When I've added fire to the fuel
For the times when I've hated
Been bitter and jaded and cruel
We get what we give in return
Maybe as we live we will learn
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
Be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
Oh, be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
Oh, be good to each other
Be good to each other
Oh, be good
The wind always be at our back
As we follow our dreams
May our hearts ever lead and not lose track
May we smile at the end of the day
May we always find a way
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
Well, there's already plenty of pain
In this world to last for years
Yeah, just look out any window
There's heartache and sorrow and tears
It's easy to see what we need
Now really, how hard could it be
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
We could try a little tenderness
Yeah, and see how we like it
It just might bring out our very best
If we keep love in sight
And be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
I'm sorry for times
When I've added fire to the fuel
For the times when I've hated
Been bitter and jaded and cruel
We get what we give in return
Maybe as we live we will learn
To be good to each other
To be good to each other
Be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
Oh, be good to each other
Yeah, be good to each other
Oh, be good to each other
Be good to each other
Oh, be good
XO,
Vicki
